The Parsons Farmer’s Market 2010 season

The Parsons Farmer’s Market will open the 2010 season on Tuesday, April 27. The Market is open every Tuesday and Saturday for local vendors to share their crops with the public. The market is located south of the Parsons Recreation Center and Swimming Pool at Forest Park. Hours are Tuesdays from 4-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 7-10 a.m.

What a beautiful day today has turned out to be! Looking at the forecast they are saying rain tomorrow, and then more sunshine with a chance of rain. OOH lets hope not! I seen in the paper today that the Easter Egg hunt has been rescheduled for this Saturday. You can read more about it HERE (I'm guessing the information is still the same, just a different day).

Don't forget to stop by Steve's Lock Out for extra boat, mower, 4-wheeler, camper, etc. keys before you head to the lake this weekend! Loosing keys is never fun!

On Friday Taco Mayo is donating a portion of sales to help the Babe Ruth little league.. You could help you community by just eating a taco!!

Saturday night PALS animal shelter is having a fundraiser at the Kitchen Pass. Calling Tokyo will begin preforming at 9:00pm. A portion of the cover charge proceeds will be donated to the Animal Shelter.

Also this Saturday is the Moe Bandy concert, with proceeds going to the Local Red Cross. You can get more info about the concert in the post HERE

Moe Bandy in Concert

It will be a fundraiser for the Local Red Cross chapter. Mark your calendars! It is on Saturday March 28 at 7:30pm at the Parsons Municipal Auditorium. Tickets are $24.00, $4.00 of which goes to the local Red Cross. Thickets can be bought at the Labette Banks in Parsons, Altamont, and Oswego, by calling the auditorium box office (620) 421-7032 or online from the Parsons Auditorium website .

Where to Recycle in Parsons

There are several opportunities for recycling items in Parsons, or Labette County. I know I'm not aware of ALL of them, so please comment if you know of others. This is just to get you started.

Steve's Lock Out, 1806 Main, Parsons
Recycles batteries. All kinds of batteries.
Their hours are 9-5 M-F and 9-3 Saturday for drop off.
Large batteries (like car batteries) or large quantities they prefer to have in boxes, but not necessary.

CLASS LTD 1207 Partridge in Parsons Drop-off (day or night)
They take almost everything, such as paper (mixed, cardboard, junk mail, shredded, newspapers), plastics 1 and 2 (it needs to have the "triangle with number" on it), tin cans, aluminum cans, and glass. Please rinse your glass, tin and aluminum products.
They prefer to have the items sorted as follows: Glass -- Paper -- Tin -- Aluminum

Westside Christian Church accepts donation of clean clothing in good condition for their Monthly Free Closing Closet, the first Saturday of the month. They also would accept plastic or paper grocery sacks.

Altamont Recycling Center located on the NE Corner of 5th & Houston collects recyclable goods on the 2nd & 4th Thursday's from 8AM to 10AM.
They are Currently Collecting:

Newspapers (inserts included) and Paper Bags
Magazines and Catalogs (including other glossy paper)
Office Paper and Junk Mail (including misc. paper and phone books)
Aluminum Cans (please crush)
Inkjet Cartridges (empty cartridges)

Wow! How time flies! It's been almost a year since I've posted here. There has been lots of exciting things happening around Parsons in the past year. The most exciting thing for me, is that Steve's Lock Out & Smelly Good Stuffs moved to a bigger and better location! See what supporting local businesses does! It helps them grow so they can have more of the stuff you like to buy!

Smelly Good Stuffs has expanded and is now carrying tye dye t-shirts and wall hangings. Steve's Lock Out has a larger variety of personal security products. Steve also is selling paint ball supplies and filling CO2.

Shop with Mom & Pop

No, I'm not talking about getting your parents and going shopping. For some of us I know that isn't even remotely possible. I'm talking about shopping at the locally owned businesses in Parsons. They are the backbone of your community. They are what keeps Parsons on the map.

From my personal experience I know that shopping a local merchant, even though I may pay a smidgen more than I would if I shopped elsewhere, is very rewarding. On most occasions I am on a personal basis with the store owner. Why? Because I shop there and support my local Mom & Pop shop frequently. Almost all the local merchants are happy to help me find products, answer my questions about products, show me what's new since the last time I was there, take my suggestions and provide me with products they don't normally keep in stock. I am a part of their business because I shop there.

Have you looked around you? Do you know what Local Parsons businesses have to offer?
To date we have 19 categories of locally owned businesses listed. I bet if you looked closely at what these merchants offer.....you could find a lot you could shop locally for.

Keep in mind that Keep It Local Parsons is a work in progress. We're still adding merchants. We haven't gotten them all listed yet.

We decided to change the header so the site has a new one now. I think the new one looks much better.

Advertising Project and Donations

KeepItLocalParsons.com is working on a couple of projects at the moment. One is some cardboard place cards for the Parsonian Hotel ($99) and the other is business cards ($59). The total for the project is $158 and so far we have $80 in one weeks time. Almost enough for the place cards. Thanks to the businesses that have donated so far : The Parsonian Hotel, Metal Masters, Taco Mayo, Hawg Heaven (which will be on the site shortly), and The Mustard Seed.

This site is for promotion of locally owned businesses only. You will not find any "big box stores" or giant discount stores here. To be on this site your business must be locally owned.

Why?

What's The Point?

Growth...what else? Local business stimulates growth and growth encourages establishment of more local businesses. It's a vicious cycle, but I like it.
